Chapter 7: The Story He Told My Staff

Curtis came to my billing office and told my employees I had chosen him over nursing.

Then he asked them to confirm it.

He stood beside the conference table while Bev and the billing team looked up from their work.

'You all know how much Maureen values this company,' he said. 'She decided years ago that nursing was behind her. I thought you could confirm that for the school.'

He wanted my staff to make his version sound like mine.

My hands shook against the edge of my desk.

'You answered the school without asking me.'

Curtis turned toward me. 'I believed I was respecting the decision you had already made.'

'You refused the offer. The school recorded that you answered for me.'

His smile stayed in place for a moment.

I looked at the people beside Bev. They had helped me build this company, and Curtis wanted them to back a lie about my life.

'Rosalind told this staff she gave Kendra the sentence in the gala program,' I said. 'She admitted she did it to protect you from questions about my place at the school.'

The room went quiet.

Curtis glanced at the wall clock.

'Your staff should be working, not listening to a family disagreement.'

He had not cared about their work until they failed to agree with him.

Bev stepped away from my desk.
