Chapter 4: The Right Biscuits

Cressida Sedley was already crying when she reached the gate.

She stood at the gate with the paper bag against her camel coat and let the tears run, and the man with the spaniel took a full step closer.

"I'm not here to cause trouble," she said. "I swear it, Rhiannon. I just couldn't sit in that house knowing."

"Knowing what?" I said.

"That it was my fault."

Rafe turned his head sharply.

"Cress," he said. "Don't."

"No, he has to hear it. You both do." She wiped her cheek with one knuckle. "On Monday, Rafe asked me to help with his diary. He was going to Zurich, he was snowed under, and I said I knew a much better nanny agency."

"Did you."

"I rang them from his study. I asked them to hold the Tuesday start and move it to Thursday, so the new girl could meet Tilly properly." Her voice cracked. "I thought I was being useful. They must have cancelled it instead."

Out of the corner of my eye I saw Rafe go very still.

"From his study," I said.

"On his laptop. He'd left it open."

"Cress," Rafe said slowly, "I never gave you my password."

"Darling, it's on a sticky note on your monitor."

It was.

I had teased him about it for years.

Cressida turned to me with her whole face open.

"I'm so sorry. If you want me to say it to anyone, the agency, a solicitor, a magistrate, I will. I'll say it was me."
