Chapter 10: Hero on Channel Eight

"Who told them that?" I said.

"The producer didn't say." Cal was already scrolling. "I can guess."

"So can I."

He looked up.

"I'm going to call her back. Tonight. I'll tell her what I saw and send her the file."

"No."

It came out louder than I meant.

Cal waited.

"Joey watches the news with his grandmother," I said. "Every night at six, before his bath. She thinks it's good for him."

"He's four."

"She thinks everything that woman does is good for him."

I looked at the dark window.

"If you send it, they'll play it. And he'll see his father walk away from a burning car with me inside it. And then he'll hear everybody at preschool talking about it for a year."

Cal didn't argue.

He put the phone face down on the floor.

"Your call," he said. "But I'm not going to tell them he's a hero. If she calls again, I'm telling her the truth, or I'm telling her nothing."

"Tell her nothing."

"Okay."

He left at one.

At the top of the stairs he said, "Lock this," and went down.

The next afternoon I had my first physical therapy session at a clinic off Broadway.

The waiting room had eight plastic chairs and a TV mounted high in the corner.

At five o'clock the woman at the desk turned the sound up for the news, the way she did every day, she said.

I was filling out a pain chart when I heard his name.

"Dalton Builders CEO Scott Dalton says he doesn't feel like a hero."

I looked up.

There he was, on the sidewalk outside the Pearl District office, in a navy blazer.

His mother stood half a step behind him in pearls, with her hand on his back.

"It happened so fast," Scott said to the camera. "The car was upside down. There was smoke everywhere. My son was screaming. I just did what anybody would. I got my family out."
