Chapter 14: What Phone

I turned the shoebox upside down on the bed.

No phone.

Cal got down on the floor with his phone's flashlight.

He looked under the bed, behind the piano, inside every trash bag I hadn't unpacked.

"When did you last see it?"

"The night I moved in. I plugged it in, it didn't turn on, and I put it back."

"Who's been up here?"

"You. Me." I thought about it. "Nobody."

"Lock's not broken." He crouched by the door and ran his thumb along the frame. "Somebody had a key, or somebody let them in."

We didn't find it.

He slept on the floor that night with his back against the door.

In the morning he went home to shower, and he didn't argue when I said I was fine.

I wasn't fine.

I didn't sleep again until Monday.

At eight on Monday there was a knock at the top of the stairs.

It was the man who owned the music shop, in his cardigan, holding a vase of lilies that had gone brown at the edges.

"I owe you an apology," he said. "These came Friday morning. I put them in the back and then I closed up for the weekend and forgot all about them."

"Who brought them?"

"Your brother-in-law. Nice young man, very good suit." He smiled.

"He said you'd had a terrible week and he wanted to surprise you. I let him wait up here, since he's family. I hope that was all right."

I held on to the door frame.

"How long did he wait?"

"Oh, half an hour. Then he came down and said he'd missed you and he'd try another time. He asked me to give you these." He looked at the flowers. "I'm afraid they've turned."

Friday morning I'd been at the garden, standing at a microphone.

Brett had known exactly where I'd be.

The whole city had known.
