Chapter 20: Sunday Service

"I wrote it because she called me," I said. "And I didn't stop her."

"Stop her from what?" Scott said.

"From coming to get you," Brett said gently, to me. "That's what you meant. It's okay. Just say it."

"From leaving you, Scott. From getting on that plane."

Scott looked at his brother.

Brett looked back at him, steady and sad, and didn't blink.

Scott picked up the tablet from the bed.

He held it a second, looking at the dark screen.

Then he put it under his arm and walked out without a word.

His mother stood and smoothed her dress.

"There," she said. "Now he knows what you are."

Brett held the door for her.

On the landing he turned back and gave me a small shrug.

On Thursday a woman from my old choir texted me.

"She's speaking at the 10:30 on Sunday. A word for the family. I'm so sorry. I thought you'd want to know."

"Don't go," Cal said, when I showed him.

Then he looked at my face.

"Okay," he said. "I'll drive."

The Dalton family church was white clapboard on a hill in the West Hills, with a parking lot bigger than the building.
