Forty people were watching me.

Brett was on the carpet with his nose bleeding into his cuff.

His mother had the papers pressed to her chest.

Scott was waiting.

I could have said it was complicated.

I'd said that to myself for three years, in the shower, in the car, in the back seat.

"I knew," I said. "She called me from the car and told me. I went and got Joey."

Scott's jaw moved.

"And then the police called you, and you called me from Bend, and you were crying so hard I couldn't understand you. And I was standing in your nursery holding your son."

"You could've told me then."

"Then what? You'd lost your wife. You were going to lose her twice? You were going to find out your brother, the same week?"

I looked at Brett on the floor.

"And Joey. Someday Joey would have found out his mother left him alone in the dark to get on a plane."

Brett said nothing.

"I wrote the letter because I answered and I didn't beg her to turn around," I said. "That was my fault. That was the only part that was."
