Chapter 24: The Lining

Scott looked at the phone in my hand for a long time.

Then he gave it back to me, very carefully, by the edges.

"Okay," he said.

He didn't get up off the floor.

He sat against the piano with his arms on his knees and stared at the trash bags I still hadn't unpacked.

"Brett's gone," he said. "He packed a bag last night and took the boat out. Mom won't speak to me." He laughed, without any sound. "I had a whole life on Monday."

I'd had one on July eleventh.

"Can I ask you one thing?" he said. "Not for me."

"What?"

"Joey." He finally looked up. "He asks for you every night. Since the cake. He won't let Mom put him to bed. He sleeps on the floor of my study with the bear."

He swallowed. "Could he see you? Saturdays. Just Saturdays. I'll drop him off and I'll go. You won't have to see me."

I looked at the man on my floor.

Gray at the temples, with his brother's blood on his cuff.

I had wanted, for nine years, for him to need something from me that wasn't a chore.

This was it.

It was for somebody else.

"Saturdays," I said. "Ten to four."

He shut his eyes.

"Thank you."

He got up off the floor and went down the stairs.

On Friday Cal had a day off.

"Where do you want to go?" he said. "Anywhere."

I thought about it.

"The coast."

"On 26?"

"That's the road to the coast."
