Chapter 25: The Program

"Why is Uncle Brett kissing Mommy?"

I took the strip out of his fingers.

I didn't snatch it. I took it the way I'd take a pair of scissors from him, slowly, so he wouldn't grab back.

"That's a grown-up picture," I said.

"But why is he?"

He was looking right at me, and he wasn't four for a second.

He was waiting to see if I'd lie.

"That's a real question," I said. "It's a big one. I'll answer it when you're bigger."

"Bigger like five?"

"Bigger like a lot bigger."

"Are you going to throw it away?"

"No. I'll keep it safe. I promise."

He nodded slowly.

Then he looked down at the velvet box in his lap.

"Is the necklace broken now?"

"Just the box. The necklace is fine."

"Grandma's going to be mad about the box."

"I'll tell her I did it."

That made him look at me again.

I put the strip face down on top of the piano and set a hymnal on it.

We made grilled cheese on the hot plate.

He ate the crusts first and saved the middle, the way he always had, and I didn't say anything about it.
