I read the line until the screen went dark in my hand.
Then I called Scott.
He picked up on the first ring. He'd never once done that in two years of marriage.
"I'm looking at it," he said.
"Did you know?"
"No. She won't take my calls. I've tried four times since dinner." He sounded like he was walking. "I called the board chair. She said the programs went to the printer Thursday, and the concert is Mom's, and it always has been."
"I never asked to apologize."
"I know."
Neither of us hung up for a while.
Then Joey called for him from somewhere in the house, and he went.
For ten days I didn't answer anyone from that church.
I took Joey on Saturdays.
The second Saturday he brought the wooden lighthouse.
He set it on top of the piano and pressed it on and off the whole time I played.
On Wednesday nights Cal worked a twenty-four, and I'd started bringing dinner to the station.
The crew set a place for me now.
That Wednesday the bay doors were rolled up to let the heat out.
