Chapter 55: Gu

Gu did not sit down.

He stood in the middle of the plastic chairs with one hand on his cane chair.

He smiled at the captain.

"Captain. This is a shareholders' meeting. If you have a complaint, my counsel will receive it in the morning."

"I have a warrant," the captain said. "It names you."

She opened the folder.

Behind her the two officers came forward and stood on either side of the door, and the reporters raised their phones higher.

"Gu Zhengnan, I am arresting you for conspiracy and fraud."

She did not look away from him.

"And for giving a controlled depressant to Xiao Chen for three years."

She turned a page.

"And of ordering the attack on Bridge Road."

A murmur ran through the board.

Gu's smile did not move.

"This is absurd. I am a pillar of this company."

"I have Chi Feng's deposit box," the captain said.

She held up a sheaf of paper.

"Bank statements from Gu Harbour Holdings into Mrs. Shen's private account, every month for four years."

She turned another page.

"I have thirty-six pharmacy slips signed for by Chi & Partners, from Harbour Pharmacy, which you own."

Gu's lawyer stood up and sat down again.

"And I have a statement signed in the women's prison last month by Mrs. Shen."

Her voice stayed level.

"She sat in her own sitting room and heard you give the order for the van."

She looked up.

"She quotes you word for word. Keep the boy quiet."

A board member in the third row pushed his chair back from Gu's.

Then another did.

Mr. Shen did not move at all.

Gu looked slowly round the room at the faces turned away from him, and something in his own face loosened.

It was only a little, but Xiao Chen watched it go.
