Chapter 16: Her Own Number

I didn't open the door.

I put on my parka and went out the back, down the inside stairs, and around to the porch.

I wasn't letting her into my flat. I also wasn't going to talk through glass.

Brooke watched me come up the outside steps in my boot.

"You walk better," she said.

"Seven screws. They hold."

She held out her phone.

It was a photo of a phone. Bryce's phone, on a kitchen counter I knew.

My kitchen counter. The white quartz I'd picked out.

On the screen was the Ledger.

The People section. His Daily review, saved at 10:01 p.m. on Friday.

Brooke: 10 until April. Then 5.

Under it, in the reason column:

Post-signing.

I looked at it for a long moment.

"When did you take this?"

"Friday night. He went to shower. His watch had buzzed and he'd scored us right in front of me, like always." Her voice was steady. Her hands weren't. "He doesn't hide it from me. He never hid it from you either. That's the part that's so..."

She stopped.

"So what?"

"Insulting." She laughed, and it came out wrong. "He thinks we can't read."

The wind came off the lake and rattled the porch rail.

Downstairs my neighbor's TV went quiet.

"Why are you on my porch, Brooke?"

She took a folded paper out of her parka pocket.

She didn't hand it to me. She held it against her chest.

"There's a document. About the Priority Pass. About how it works in the queue." She swallowed. "It's what the engineer wouldn't tell you. You know there's something. You don't know what."

"And you'll give it to me."

"Yes."

"For what?"

"My name stays out of it." She said it fast, like she'd practiced. "Out of everything. Your video, your lawyers, the board, your little club. I give you this, you give it to whoever you want, and nobody ever knows where it came from."
