Chapter 20: Ten Times

Jesse looked at the phone in his hand.

"Ten times," Bryce said through the speaker. "Think about what that means for your daughter. College. A house with a yard. A dad who's home."

I felt Jesse's chest go tight against me.

"You don't have to answer now," Bryce said. "Come by the office. Thursday, ten a.m. Let's talk like adults."

"I'll come by," Jesse said.

"Great. I'll have coffee."

Jesse hung up.

I stared at him.

"You're going?"

"He wants an audience." He put the phone back in his pocket. "I'll give him one."

"I'm coming."

"I know you are." He kissed my forehead. "I wasn't going to ask you not to. I learned that one tonight."

On Thursday, April 2, we drove to the Third Ward together in his truck.

He wore his old Med 14 job shirt, the navy one with the patch.

I stayed in the lobby, by the front desk and the big screen of numbers.

The young man at the desk saw me and went pale again.

"Ms. Wardlow."

"I'm just waiting," I said. "Quietly, this time."

Bryce came down the open stairs at ten exactly, with two coffees.
