Chapter 10: Terms
Luca caught up with them in the elevator lobby, where the walls were glass and anyone could see.
Mirella looked at him, then at her sister.
"I'll wait in the car," she said. "If you're not down in ten minutes, I'm sending Zia Nella up."
She pressed the button and was gone.
Livia stood with her back to the city.
"Five minutes," she said.
"I'll take them."
He didn't come closer.
He stood with his hands at his sides, and it was strange to see him without his phone, his jacket buttoned and his eyes on her face.
"I'm going to say it in order," Luca said. "You can stop me."
"Go ahead."
"I knew from the first night. I watched you take the mark off in the bathroom, and I stayed in the hall."
"Why?"
"Because my father arranged the marriage and I wanted to catch him in something." He said it flatly. "I thought if the bride was wrong, I would find out who knew, and use it. And then you never asked me for anything, so there was nothing to use."
"That's three years."
"It's three years. I told myself you were waiting. I told myself you were good at it."
"Good at what?"
"Wanting something and hiding it."
Livia nearly laughed.
"I wanted to be paid, Luca. And I wanted to go."
"I know that now."
"You didn't know it on Thursday."
"No."
He drew a breath.
"On Thursday a woman I'd loved for nine years said you'd pushed her, and I believed it before I asked you where you were. I put you down a flight of stairs because I wanted it to be true."
"Why?"
