Chapter 5: The Terms

The contractions stopped at four in the morning.

By eight, the obstetrician had read my chart twice and told me I could go home.

"Bed rest, mostly," she said. "No stairs. No stress."

I looked at her.

"I'll do my best," I said.

She did not smile, but the charge nurse behind her did, and went to find my discharge papers.

I sat on the edge of the bed with the duffel bag on my knees and nowhere to carry it.

The room had a window that looked straight down on the roof of the building.

I had not looked at that roof in seven months.

Somebody knocked on the door frame.

"I'm not here to ask you anything," Ansel said.

He was holding two paper cups. He set one on the tray table in front of me.

"It's decaf. The OB says one cup of the real thing and she'll find me."

I looked at the cup, then at him.

"I have a spare room," he said.

"No."

"It's got a lock on the inside and a bathroom you don't share. My house is in Clintonville."

"I'm not a patient anymore."

"No," he said. "You're a colleague who's been locked out of her own bank account and is carrying a baby. I'm offering a door that locks. That's all it is."

I wanted to refuse.

Then the baby rolled over under my ribs and pushed a heel into my bladder.

"There would have to be terms," I said.

"Naturally."

I held up a finger.

"One. Seven nights. After that we talk again."

"Seven nights."

"Two. I pay rent. Weekly. The day I get any of my money back, you name a number and I pay it."
