Chapter 7: One Night

I was still laughing when I stopped.

The flashlight lay on the mattress, pointing at the ceiling, so the whole loft glowed a dim yellow.

Cal was close enough that I could smell cedar and rain on him.

His palm was still wrapped in the rag, and my hand was still on his wrist.

"Seven years," I said.

"Seven years."

"I've been angry at you for all of them. I'd like to know what that was for."

"I'd like to know that too."

"Then here's what I want," I said. "I want one night."

He went very still.

"One night," I said. "Not a second chance, not a fresh start, not a talk about what it means. I've had enough of men who decide things for me. This is mine."

"Okay."

"Rule one is that it's one night and nobody gets a feeling out of it."

"Okay."

"Rule two is that nobody hears about it. Not Hallie, not the clinic, not anyone at that hall."

"Okay."

"Rule three, you stay on your own side of the bed."

"There's one side of the bed, Lena."

"Then pick one."

He thought about it, with the flashlight on his face and the little crease between his eyebrows I remembered so well.

"Left," he said. "It's your good ear."

My throat went tight.

"You remembered that."

"I never forgot it. I just didn't know where to put it down."

"Rule one," I said, to keep from saying anything else. "Say it back."
