Chapter 6: A Pilot With Bandaged Hands

"Routine purge," Camille said, before Hayes could finish reading the line aloud. "The system clears radio traffic every thirty days."

"It was the fifteenth," Hayes said. "It had been one day."

"I cleared it by hand. I was trying to protect the pilots from a lawsuit."

"Whose lawsuit?"

"Hers." She didn't look at me. "Hayes, think. A grieving family, a fire, a company with a helicopter on standby. Anything on that tape becomes evidence."

"It was evidence for me too."

"Then I made a mistake."

She said it so easily that I almost believed her.

Hayes closed his laptop.

"Go home, Camille. Take a week."

"You're putting me on leave?"

"I'm asking you to leave this floor until I understand what happened on my fleet."

"Of course." She lifted her chin and tucked Duchess closer. "But you should know, as the named operating officer on every Sentinel contract, I'm the person your customers call. If I leave this building, the phones don't stop."

"Then someone else will answer them."

"Who?" she asked, softly.

He had no answer.

She walked out with her back straight, and the door clicked behind her.

Hayes stood at the window with both fists on the glass.

"I'll fix this," he said. "I'll put someone else on the ops floor today."

"Who, Hayes? You don't know anyone down there."

"I know Fred."

"Fred is a pilot."

He turned to me then.

His eyes were red, and I understood he had not slept either.

"Where are you going now?" he asked.

"To see a man about an airplane."
