Chapter 16: Friday, Ten A.M.

At ten o'clock on Friday the special session opened, and I walked in with a reporter on each side of me.

I had called two of them myself.

The board chair rose from the head of the table.

"This is a closed meeting," he said. "The press will wait in the corridor."

"Then they'll wait for me," I said. "I have the right to attend. I'm a party to the motion."

"You are not a director."

"I'm the inventor of the license you're selling."

Ruby shut the door behind us and stood against it with her arms folded.

Dalton sat at the foot of the table in his charcoal suit.

He was looking at his hands, and he did not look up, because I had told him to say nothing until I said his name.

"Let's begin," the chair said. He opened a folder. "Item one is a consent to transfer the Harbor City license to a holding company. The chief executive signed it on Tuesday night."

"Did he?" the woman with the gold pin said.

"At home, in his study, a little after eleven." The chair's voice was smooth. "I was there. I watched him sign."

I let the silence stand a moment.

"You watched him sign," I said.

"I did."

"At eleven o'clock on Tuesday night."

"Eleven-oh-two, according to the stamp."

"In his study at the penthouse."

"That's what I said."

"Interesting," I said. "Because I was with Dalton Aldridge at eleven on Tuesday night."

Every head turned.
