Chapter 19: Nothing Left to Hold

Dalton's POV

On Monday morning I sat in my lawyer's office and signed away the only thing I had ever been good at keeping.

"You're certain," he said, for the third time.

"Read it back."

"Your voting shares in Aldridge Holdings move into an independent trust. You hold no vote and no seat. The trustee is the board's senior independent director."

"The woman with the gold pin."

"Yes. The trust can never sell, license or assign any patent held by Monica Aldridge. She's named in the instrument as sole owner."

"And the grandfather's clause?"

"Void. You resign as chief executive today, so there's no control left for the trust to remove."

He turned the last page toward me.

"The company will survive it. You won't be a rich man the way you were."

"I'll be a man who can pay rent."

"Dalton."

"Where do I sign?"

He showed me.

I signed my name nine times, and my hand did not shake until the ninth.

It was the slanted D again.

Somebody had copied it very well once, and I looked at it for a moment longer than I needed to.

Then I went down to the thirty-eighth floor to clean out my desk.

My assistant was standing beside it with his hands clasped, as he had stood every morning for six years.

I had trusted him with my calendar, my passwords and the key to the study.

I had not asked him once why he looked at the floor whenever Belinda walked in.
