Chapter 12: Stalker

The whole arch gathered round Zoe's phone.

Madison sat in the back of a car in soft light, no makeup, or makeup made to look like none.

Her eyes were wet.

"I wasn't going to talk about this," she said. "But I think women need to hear it."

She said there was a woman at her husband's company who'd been obsessed with him for years.

She said the woman had followed him around the office, cried in his car, turned up at his apartment.

She said that when Pierce finally married the love of his life, this woman chased him across the ocean to London.

"She took a job she wasn't qualified for just to be near our business. She's living with strangers. Pierce is too kind to say anything. So I am."

Then a photo filled the screen.

Me, at the bench in my apron, with my hair coming out of its clip.

The photographer had taken it on October 5, while I was throwing them out.

The caption said, "This is her. Ladies, protect your marriages."

The comments came up the side faster than I could read them.

Psycho.

Get a life.

Somebody had already found my name.

Peggy took the phone out of Zoe's hand and turned it face down on the bench.

"Right," she said. "That's enough of that."

My own phone wouldn't stop.

Old colleagues. A reporter. My aunt in Ohio.

I turned it off.

The arch was very quiet.

Oliver was standing at the end of the bench with his hands in fists at his sides.

"Tell me what you need," he said.

"Nothing yet."

"Laura."

"Nothing yet," I said. "Let me think."

I thought all night in Peggy's back bedroom.

At eight the next morning Zoe knocked and came in holding her phone.

"She's doing an event today," she said. "Garland's pop-up on Regent Street. Two o'clock. A 'meet the brand' thing, champagne and personal shopping. She posted it."
