Chapter 4: Coffee, Black

I went for the coffee.

I wanted to see what Odette wanted, and the only way to find out was to sit across from her.

She took me to a diner two blocks from Rosewood Gardens and ordered for both of us without asking.

Black coffee for me, a vanilla latte for her.

"Black, right?" she said. "No sugar. Gavin says you've drunk it that way since college."

I had not told Gavin that in ten years.

I had told Odette, on a Monday last winter, when she brought me a cup at the office.

I said nothing.

"Tilda," she said, folding her hands, "I want you to know I never meant to hurt you."

"What exactly did you do?"

"The dress." She looked at the table. "Gavin said you wanted something special. I picked it because it was beautiful. I had no idea it would upset you."

"He told you I love green."

"He did." Her eyes came up, wide and honest. "Is that not true?"

"It's not true."

"Oh." She pressed her fingers to her mouth. "Oh, Tilda. I'm so sorry. He does this, you know. He gets an idea and decides it's a memory."

She said it softly and leaned toward me.

I watched her face.

The reason she was telling me this was plain. She wanted me to feel I had an ally, and she wanted me to talk.

So I let her.

"How long have you worked for him?" I asked.

"Three years in March."

"And you visit my mother on Thursdays."

"Gavin asked me." She turned her cup. "She reminds me of someone. I don't have much family."
