Chapter 19: The Terrace
The Founders' Gala was held in the county fairgrounds pavilion, under a tin roof strung with white lights.
On Thursday evening, forty round tables stood in rows with the cloths half on, and caterers were carrying chairs from a truck.
The sound man met us at the side door with a headset around his neck.
He was the young father's cousin, the one who had stood in Gran's kitchen with his hat in his hands.
"Redwing's PR man is on the floor," he said. "He hired me, so he thinks I'm his. Stay in the booth and stay dark."
The booth was a plywood box on stilts at the back of the hall.
Its window looked straight down the center aisle to the stage.
Jonah climbed the ladder first and held out his hand for me.
Inside, the mixing board lit the cousin's face green.
"Cue one is house music," he said. "Cue two is your microphone. The real tape loads Saturday morning, off a stick, so nobody can wipe it from here."
He tapped a small silver fader.
"When you nod at the window, I push this up."
I looked down the aisle at the podium.
It was a long way off.
Jonah stood behind me with his hands at his sides, and I leaned back until my shoulder met his chest.
"Saturday," he said, very low.
"I know what day it is."
Down on the floor, the side door banged.
Dalton came in with a folder, and behind him came the thin man in the quarter-zip, the PR man who had written every statement Redwing had put out about my grandmother.
Piper wasn't with them.
Dalton walked up the steps to the podium and the PR man took a chair in the front row with his tablet on his knee.
