Chapter 4: Twice
I hit him.
It was an open hand, across the face, hard enough that the sound went out over the headstones.
He didn't lift his arm or step back.
He stood under the cedar and let the red come up on his cheek.
"Yes," he said. "That's fair."
Behind me, I heard the crowd go quiet at the far end of the grass.
I didn't care who saw.
"You were four minutes from her."
"I know."
"You were looking at the road. I saw the video. You were looking at the road the whole time."
"I was." His voice was rough. "I can't do this here. Not on her grave. I'll come anywhere else you tell me."
I looked at his hands.
They were shaking, and he had put them into his jacket pockets to hide it.
"The barn on the orchard," I said. "Six o'clock. If you're a minute late, I'll tell everyone who you are."
"I'll be early."
He was.
I came out of the house at 5:40 with a flashlight and found him sitting on an apple crate in the open barn doors, with his back to the orchard and his hands between his knees.
I didn't sit.
"Talk."
"I was Army medevac for eleven years," Jonah said. "I've flown for Redwing for two. Aircraft Two is the ridge bird. That makes me the pilot nobody on your road ever met."
"I've never met you."
"Dalton kept the pilots away from the families. He said it made the members feel safer if they never saw us." He looked at his boots. "On Thursday at 4:09, dispatch patched your call straight into my headset. I heard you say mile marker 6."
