Chapter 16: Nothing in His Hands
Ward pulled up his trousers and sat down behind his desk, and his assistant knocked on the glass.
She was a composed woman of fifty who had worked for his father, and she had never knocked on the glass before.
"Come in," Ward said.
She opened the door six inches and did not come in.
"I've moved the two o'clock," she said. "And the three. Facilities will be up with a cleaning cart."
"Thank you," Ward said.
"The floor has been told it saw a delivery dispute."
"That's very kind," Ward said.
"Mr. Gibbes." She paused. "If you'd like the blinds permanently closed, I'll arrange it."
"No," Ward said. "Leave them."
She looked at him for a moment, nodded, and shut the door.
He sat for a long time without moving.
The bank letter lay on the blotter, creased and damp.
He could still feel Rett's hand on his neck and the belt on the floor.
He could still hear the word mine, said in anger in front of forty people.
He did not know what to do with it.
He had been given the thing he wanted, and it came wrapped in a refusal.
He picked up the letter and read it twice.
