Chapter 24: Wrong Room
"Wrong room?" a man asked in the dark.
Rett smiled before he turned his head.
The storm had come in at dusk and taken every light in the inn on Edisto Island, exactly as it had a year ago.
He lay on top of the covers in room six with his shoes off, listening to the rain.
He had been listening for the door for an hour.
"I think you know it is," he said.
"I counted the doors."
"And?"
"I got it wrong again. I'm very sorry." The mattress dipped as the man sat on the edge of it. "I'll go."
"Take your shoes off," Rett said.
"Is that an order?"
"If you're staying on my bed, yes," Rett said.
A short breath of laughter came out of the dark, and two shoes hit the floor.
Rett reached out and found him by the shirtfront.
It was good cotton, soft with wear, and under it the chest was broad and warm and breathing fast.
"You're late," Rett said.
"The flight was delayed. I drove from Charleston in this," Ward said.
"Tobin's already given three toasts."
"Did he mention you?" Ward asked.
"Twice. He cried," Rett said.
"He cries at everything." The hand that closed over Rett's wrist was big and sure. "Did you wait for me?"
"I've been waiting since September," Rett said.
"I was in New York for a week."
"It was a long week," Rett said.
