Chapter 18: No to His Face
At eight on Friday morning, Dominic's office smelled of coffee and cologne.
He sat behind his desk in a pressed white shirt, with his sleeves rolled, and he didn't get up.
Two men in dark jackets stood on either side of the door.
I had never seen them before, but I knew the kind.
"Toby," Dominic said warmly. "And you brought company."
"She asked to come," said Tobias.
"I always ask," I said.
Dominic looked at me.
For ten years, I had watched that face go soft when it saw mine.
It didn't now.
"Allie," he said. "You look well, for a woman whose friend is trending."
"She was my friend long before she was your fiancée."
"She's both," said Dominic. "Saturday, she's my wife." He leaned back. "Colette has been crying since yesterday afternoon. I hope you're proud of yourself."
"I'm not here for Colette."
"Of course not. You're here for the drive."
He held out his hand, palm up, to Tobias.
"I'm not going to ask again," he said, pleasantly. "My Tuesday drive. You took it from my desk when you went for the rings. I have the doorman's log."
"I took it," said Tobias.
"I know you did. Give it back, and we'll forget it."
"No."
Dominic's hand stayed where it was.
"Say that again."
"No," Tobias said. "I won't give it to you. I won't sign your venue form, I won't sign the closing papers, and I won't stand next to you on Saturday."
I watched Tobias say it.
He wasn't loud, and his voice didn't shake.
