Chapter 19: Every Employee in the Lobby

Tobias's POV

"Give me five minutes alone with him," I told Allegra.

She stood in Dominic's doorway with her bag on her shoulder and didn't move.

"No."

"You said I had to say no to your face. I'm asking you to let me say it to his."

She looked at me for a long moment.

Then she nodded once and went out, and Stefano's voice in the hall said something light, and the door closed behind her.

The two men in dark jackets stayed.

Dominic waved them out with two fingers, and they went.

He sat on the edge of his desk with the phone still in his hand.

"Here's the thing, Toby," he said, in the voice he used for investors. "You've been brave, and it's very moving. But let's talk about what you've got."

"I've got the drive."

"You've got a video of two people at a kitchen table. Do you know what the police will see?" He held up one finger. "A forged signature, which they can't prove is mine. A guarantee with your name on it. A transfer you approved. And one extra thing."

He held up a second finger.

"A video of you, in a ballroom, with a plate in your hand, shoving a cake into the face of the woman you were about to marry."

I didn't say anything.

"That one's real," said Dominic. "Four hundred people saw it. Every client you've got has seen it, and every lender. You're the man who did that. Whatever else is true, you did that. And when I tell the story, Toby, I'm going to tell it so that nobody wonders what else you're capable of."

It was the truest thing he had ever said to me.

I stood there with it.

I had been so careful, all week, to say I had shoved the cake and then to move on to what Dominic had done.
