Chapter 22: The Door
On Monday morning, at DePeyster Harbor, the board of seven took their seats and did not know where to look.
I sat at the head of the long table.
The registrar's letter lay in front of me.
It said that a transfer carrying a forged signature and a copied seal was void from the day it was filed, and that my thirty-eight percent had never left my name.
Beside it lay a second letter, from my mother's office, lifting the freeze.
"I hold thirty-eight percent," I said. "Mr. DePeyster holds forty. The rest was Mr. Crewe's, and his lenders now hold it against what he owes."
Nobody argued.
A woman at the far end, who had worked at the company for eleven years and had not been invited to a board meeting in nine, raised her hand.
"Ms. Bellandi, what happens to the guarantees?"
"The family's guarantees come back, at the same terms as before, on the day the sale papers are shredded." I turned a page. "I'm taking nothing from this company that I didn't put into it. I'm keeping every penny of what's mine, and the rest stays where it was."
"And the name?" asked the man next to her.
"I'd like to change it."
I slid a sheet down the table.
The board read it.
Bellandi Harbor Group.
"For three years my money carried another man's name," I said. "I'd like to see mine on the door."
"I second," said Tobias.
He sat halfway down the table, with a single folder in front of him, and he had been looking at me since I walked in.
