"I am home, Mamma," I said.
My mother looked at me for a long moment.
Then she nodded, once, as she did when a bank had agreed to her terms.
"Then I will visit at Christmas," she said. "I will bring the good olive oil. And Mr. DePeyster will read the menu."
"Signora, I always read the menu."
"I'm aware," said my mother. "It's the only reason you're standing in that kitchen."
Stefano, behind her, had to put the pastry bag over his face.
On Friday afternoon, the lobby of the Midtown tower was full.
Two hundred and thirty people stood on the white marble, in lanyards and good shoes.
The reporters were back, and so was the wall screen, which no one had turned on.
Above the reception desk, where the old sign had been, there was a new one in brass.

Stefano stood at my elbow, scrolling his phone.
"Status report," he said. "Dominic is in a rented room in Hoboken, answering his lenders one phone call at a time. Colette is at her mother's in Connecticut. Nobody has asked either of them to a dinner, and I'm told the bakery that made her cake has taken it off their website."
"Thank you."
"I'm very proud of you, cousin. I'm also very hungry."
"Hold on."
On a long table by the elevators stood a cake.
I had ordered it myself.
It was three tiers of white buttercream, no piping, and no words.
I walked to the front, with Tobias beside me, and took the microphone.
