Chapter 9: The Edit
"Two million," Stefano said, taking my phone out of my hand. "Don't read the comments. I mean it. Read them in an hour, once we've given them something better."
We stood in the hallway outside the boardroom while directors hurried past us with their phones to their ears.
"What do we have?"
"The lobby has eleven cameras. Our family pays the security firm that runs nine of them." He was already typing. "I asked for the full footage on Friday, in case you wanted it."
"Why would I want it?"
"Because I know Colette. She's the type to edit."
Four minutes later, he handed my phone back.
On the screen was the lobby, from the ceiling.
It was the whole scene, in order.
My arms around myself in the elevator doors, the soup stain, Colette's fingers pressing on my side, and then my hands pushing her off.
Dominic's shove.
Tobias's hands on my shoulders, and me going down on my knees.
I looked at it for a while.
Seeing it from above was worse.
I could see exactly where each of them was standing.
"I'll post it," Stefano said. "Your account or mine?"
"Mine."
I typed one line under it.
Watch the whole thing.
Then I sent it.
By the time we reached the elevator, the first comments were coming in.
They were not kind to Colette.
Stefano read me one aloud, and then one more, and then he stopped because I had started to laugh.
It was a tired laugh, and it hurt the burn.
Tobias was waiting in the hall outside the elevator.
