Chapter 10: The Blue Folder
Alasdair's POV
I had carried the blue folder in the inside pocket of my suit jacket all night.
I'd carried it for six months, and for six months I'd put off the moment I'd have to take it out.
The hotel gave the foundation's honorees a suite on the thirty-second floor.
Genevieve walked in ahead of me, kicked off her shoes, and set the glass trophy down on a marble table.
Her hands were still shaking.
She turned around.
"Not yet," she said. "She said, not yet. And you weren't surprised."
I took off my jacket and laid it over a chair.
I took the folder out of the inside pocket and put it on the table beside the trophy, where the lamp lit it.
It was an ordinary blue cardboard folder, softened at the corners from being handled.
"Franklin gave me this nine days before he died," I said. "He told me to give it to you the day you left Colin, and not a day before."
"Why not a day before?"
"Read the first page."
She sat on the edge of the sofa, and she read it.
I had read that page forty times. I knew where each line was.
I knew when she reached the clause, because her lips moved.
Franklin VanBuren's shares of VanBuren Holdings, fifty-one percent of its voting stock, pass to Genevieve Wrenfield VanBuren.
They pass on the day she is no longer married to Colin VanBuren.
Until that day, they stay in trust, voted by the trustee.
"Who's the trustee?" she asked.
"Lorna."
Genevieve looked up.
"Franklin knew his mother," I said. "He knew she'd never let you go if she thought you'd leave with the company. And he knew Colin wouldn't leave on his own."
