Chapter 14: The Walk-In
Carmine slapped the table and laughed until he coughed.
"That's a son," he said to Aurelio. "That's a real son."
Aurelio didn't laugh.
He watched Rocco with his pale eyes for a long time.
"Tomorrow night," he said at last. "After the last dance. Lucio goes with you."
"Fine."
"And Rocco. If she's breathing on Sunday, you won't be."
"I understand, Father."
Rocco pulled me up out of the chair by my arm.
He wasn't gentle.
He marched me out of the room, down the hall, and through a service door, with Lucio two steps behind us.
We went down the stairs to the basement kitchen.
The Bellweather crew had gone home.
The steel counters were empty and shining.
Rocco pulled open the heavy door of the walk-in freezer and pushed me inside.
Then he stepped in after me.
"Wait out there," he told Lucio. "I want a minute with her."
Lucio smirked.
"Take two."
The door swung shut.
The fan roared overhead.
The cold hit me all at once, and I started shaking.
Rocco turned around.
