Chapter 10: Three Alphas

The glass conference room held four Alphas, one Beta, one girlfriend and me.

I sat at the end of the table with a legal pad.

Alasdair sat at the head, with his hands flat.

The two other Alphas had come to be convinced, and Dorian Ashe had come to watch.

He lounged in his chair across from me with his boots crossed and his scarred eyebrow lifted, looking at me instead of at the folder.

"The last Ironwood contract was written in 2019," the older Alpha said. "Your terms were tight and your payments were late. Why should three packs bind themselves to you?"

Alasdair opened his mouth.

I got there first.

"Because your three packs have mined the same two ridges for a decade and never found a buyer who pays at the gate," I said. "We have one. He pays on delivery, in full, and he's offered to take every ounce you can pull out."

The older Alpha frowned at me.

"Who are you?"

"Odette Swinburne. I keep the ledgers."

"Then what's the weekly yield on the Redbank seam?"

I didn't look at a page.

"Four hundred and twelve ounces. Up eleven percent since March, because Redbank installed a second crusher in April and your foreman moved his night shift to the east face."

The older Alpha looked at Dorian.

Dorian smiled slowly.

"Don't look at me," he said. "I've never heard that number said so prettily."

"I can give you your own seam as well," I said, turning to the woman Alpha on his left. "Two hundred and ninety. You've been shipping short because the east rail is down."
