Chapter 4: Business Only

I opened the door on its chain and looked at him through the gap.

"How did you know which room?" I asked.

"I asked the front desk who had booked twenty nights and paid in advance." Nathaniel held up one coffee. "They remember cash people."

"I paid by card."

"Then they remember people who don't smile at the desk."

I unhooked the chain.

He walked in and put one cup in my hand without asking how I took it.

It was black, no sugar.

"Lucky guess," I said.

"Yes," he said, and sat down on the edge of the armchair instead of in it.

I noticed that.

Most men with his money took the best seat in the room.

"I was in Milan for a trade show," he said. "When Trevor called his lawyers tonight, I thought he might send someone to your door before you slept. So I came."

"He's not that organized."

"He will be by morning." He took a folder from his jacket. "Read it."

It was a contract.

Chief Science Officer, Rhodes Maison. A lab on the eleventh floor of his New York tower, a staff I would hire myself, and a signing bonus with seven digits.

On the last page, under the compensation, one line.

Every product developed by Claire Winslow will carry her name.

I read that line three times.

Ten years, and I had never once seen my name where a customer could read it.

"Why four times?" I said.

"Pardon?"

"You tried to buy the formulas four times. Why not give up after two?"

He looked at his coffee.
