Chapter 47: A Real Grandchild

Patricia cried into the gravy boat, and nobody at my grandmother's table mentioned it.

It was the Friday after Paris, and the new furnace had been lit that morning for a test run.

The kitchen was warm, the windows steamed, and the long table held seven plates.

Madison sat beside her trainer with the baby on her knee, and the old man who had sold me the farmhouse sat at the head with a jug of his own cider.

"Say it again," Patricia said.

"I'm pregnant," I said. "Five weeks, the doctor says. Maybe six."

"A baby."

"A baby, Patricia."

"A real one." She put down her fork and pressed a napkin to her whole face. "A grandchild who has your hands."

"It won't be your grandchild," I said gently. "Not by blood."

"I have a grandchild already," Patricia said, through the napkin. "I've had one since the autumn. His mother was too proud to let me say so."

Madison went pink to her hairline.

"I didn't think you wanted him," she said.

"Wanted him? I've been knitting him a hat since the wedding."

Madison put her face in the baby's neck, and the baby grabbed her hair.

The old man poured cider into everybody's glass, including the trainer's, who had not said a word all evening and now said, "Thank you, sir."

"To the roses," said the old man. "Forty-one of them, and every one standing."

"Forty-one," Nathaniel said, from across the table. "And one more."

"One more what?"

"I'm planning ahead," he said, and met my eyes, and the whole table laughed.

Patricia stayed until nine, and told me she had visited Trevor on Tuesday and had told him there would be no more lawyers, no more forms and no more money.

"He cried," she said. "I did not."

"How do you feel?"

"Lighter," she said. "I did not think I would ever say that."

By ten, the dishes were done, the guests were gone, and the old house was quiet.
