Chapter 22: Sign Here

Corvin signed it on the captain's shoulder, in a big proud scrawl, and held it out to the senior envoy.

"There," he said. "Seal it. Now."

The senior envoy looked at the page and then at the blade across his collar.

"Seal it," the captain said, "or I open you."

The envoy lifted his ring hand.

He pressed the Concord's seal into the wax, and the red mark settled on the page.

Then he read the name on it, and I saw his face change.

I was standing by then, with Ronan's arm around me and Hester's cloak around us both.

I had walked the forty paces behind Rhona without anyone noticing, because every eye in the pass was on a gatehouse step.

The envoy read it aloud, slowly.

"Corvin Sterne," he said. "Of Greyfell. Exiled to the Northern Territories for a year and a day."

Corvin smiled.

It stayed on his face for a breath.

"That isn't right," he said.

"Your signature is under it. And the seal of the Concord."

"Read it again."

"I have read it once, Alpha, in front of seven territories."

The captain's hand came off the envoy's collar.

"Sterne," he said. "What did you sign?"

"It's the seat," said Corvin. "It's her seat. It says she gives it to me."

"It says you are exiled," said the envoy.

"Catriona wrote it!"

"I did," I said.

Every head in the bowl turned.

I stepped away from Ronan and stood in the open snow, with my hand pressed to the pink seam in my side.

"I wrote it the night I found your sale in your desk, and I kept it in my boot," I said. "For ten years you signed every paper I put in front of you. This is the last one."
