He Slept With My Roommate, So I Moved In With the Hockey Captain novel · Chapter 10 of 32

Chapter 10: The Stairs

I sat up and pulled the sheet over my chest.

Brody reached for the phone, and I said, "Don't."

He stopped.

The screen was still lit.

I need to see you. It's about her.

"Who is her?" I said.

"You."

"Then why is Kayla texting you about me?"

He didn't answer.

The party was still going downstairs, and somebody was laughing in the hall.

I waited.

He swung his legs off the bed and sat with his back to me and his elbows on his knees.

"Because she was my girlfriend," he said.

The room went very quiet.

"For three months," he said. "Since the end of July. She asked me to keep it private."

"She asked."

"She said her roommate would take it badly. That you were fragile about her friends. And I don't do public." His voice was flat. "It was easy to agree."

"Three months."

"Yes."

I thought of the mugs, the yellow one and my blue one.

I thought of Kayla coming home late and humming.

I thought of her curling my hair, and telling me what to wear, and saying, He's upstairs waiting for you.

"She was seeing you," I said slowly, "the entire time she was in bed with Cody."

"Not the entire time. She started with Cody in September."

"And you knew."

He turned his head.

His face was gray.

"Three weeks before your party," he said. "I saw her messages on her tablet when she left it at my place. I didn't say anything."
