Chapter 18: Kiss Cam

Nate made scrambled eggs on Homecoming morning and burned the first batch on purpose.

"Sit," he said.

"You burned them."

"I did it to get your attention. Sit."

I sat at the kitchen table in Brody's old practice shirt, with my toaster in front of me.

My phone lay beside it, face up.

Cody's text from the porch was still on the screen, the one that said something had happened.

At midnight I had answered him: after the game, at the Zamboni door, not before.

He had written back: Okay.

Nate scraped the pan into the trash and did not turn around.

"I knew," he said.

"Knew what?"

"About Kayla. Not the Cody part. The Brody part." He put the spatula down. "I met her in August. She was in our kitchen at seven in the morning wearing his sweatshirt, and she told me she was his cousin."

"His cousin."

"She has a very good cousin face. I said okay." His voice cracked on the okay. "Then she came back three more Sundays with the same face, and she stopped calling it cousin. She stopped talking to me at all."

I stared at him.

"You never told him you'd guessed."

"He didn't tell me, so I figured it was his business."

"Nate."

"I know." He finally turned. "And then it was your cake. I watched you go up those stairs, because I was at the keg and I saw you pass, and I knew who was in that room. I didn't stop you either."

The kitchen was very quiet.

I wanted to be furious.

I had a whole speech lined up for the right moment, and I had thought it would be for Cody.
