Chapter 7: Crown Property

Lysander ended the session with one word, and the chamber emptied in a rush of whispers.

He took me out through the side door with his hand around my elbow, hard enough to hurt.

He did not stop until we reached his study and the door had slammed behind us.

"Sit," he said.

"I'll stand."

He stood too, in the middle of the carpet, and looked at my sleeve.

I was still holding the cuff open, I realized.

I let it drop.

"You've had that mark since you were a child," he said. "You wore it to our wedding. You wore it into my sickroom when you saved my life."

"Yes."

"And you knew whose seal it was."

"Since I was sixteen," I said. "Maud read it to me."

He turned away and braced both hands on his desk.

"Two years," he said. "You sat beside me at every Council for two years, and you never said a word."

"What should I have said?" I asked. "That every contract in this kingdom is stamped with your name?"

"Yes!"

He spun around.

"Yes, Solveig. Say that to me. Scream it at me. I'd rather you had thrown a plate."

"You were a boy of seventeen with a regency that stamped every sheet put in front of you." My voice was shaking now and I hated it. "I know the history. I looked it up the week you crowned me."

"I didn't read it."

"No."

"Then why didn't you hate me for it?"

"I did."

The words dropped into the room and lay there.

"I hated you for a month," I said. "Then you came to my door in the healers' hall with a cup of tea, because you'd heard I wasn't sleeping."
