Chapter 16: Weicheng
The wet coat landed on the floor with a slap.
Yichen unbuttoned the soaked waistcoat with cold, quick fingers, and Weicheng stood still in the lamplight of the studio and let himself be undressed.
Rain ran off his hair and down his throat.
"Zhou's at her aunt's," Yichen said. "She texted. She said if the Chairman comes, don't ruin the good bolts."
"Which ones are the good bolts?"
"The ivory. Don't touch them."
The shirt peeled off, transparent and heavy.
Yichen threw it on the radiator, next to the kettle.
He took a rough towel off the dress form and rubbed it over the Chairman's hair, hard, until it stood up in black spikes.
Then over his shoulders, and chest, and the long cold arms.
Weicheng stood there with his eyes half closed.
"The folder's on the table," he said. "It's yours. I'll go if you tell me."
"I know it's mine."
"What will you do with it?"
"I'll do it in March, at my show, with you in the front row." Yichen dropped the towel. "And then I'll go to bed with you in the evening, and I'll wake up with you in the morning, and I'll do the same on a Tuesday in April."
Weicheng went very still.
"That isn't the term."
"The term was a floor. You said."
He caught the Chairman's wrists, and walked him backward two steps until the edge of the cutting table hit his hips.
"Get on it," Yichen said.
"Qingyao eats lunch there."
"Then she'll have a story."
Weicheng laughed, a short startled breath, and sat on the edge of the old wood, still in his wet trousers.
