Chapter 24: The Last Fitting
"Stand on the stool," Yichen said.
Weicheng stood on the stool.
The three tall mirrors at the foot of the bed held him from three sides, in the lamplight.
He wore the grey wedding trousers and the unbuttoned white shirt.
The jacket lay across a chair, with a white flower crushed in its lapel.
Yichen walked round him once, slowly, with the yellow tape measure hanging from his fist.
"This is the last fitting," he said.
"I thought the fitting was over."
"It's the one I do for myself."
He had taken off his own jacket and shoes in the lift.
His shirt was open to the waist, and the new ring caught the lamp on his left hand.
Weicheng held out his arms at his sides, as he had on the roof the first night, and waited.
The tape went round his chest.
Yichen read the number off the cloth in a low, careful voice, and Weicheng's breathing moved the measure a millimetre.
"A hundred and eight."
"Is that good?"
"It's mine."
The shirt came off his shoulders, and Yichen put the tape against the nape of his neck and ran it down the spine.
He felt the long muscle jump under it, just once.
"Forty-six, nape to waist."
He took the tape round the waist, with his arms behind the Chairman's back, so that his chin rested on the hard shoulder.
He did not look at the numbers.
"Eighty-four," Yichen said, against the skin.
"Check."
"I don't need to."
"Check it."
He checked.
Eighty-four.
Weicheng's mouth curved in the mirror, a thing between a smile and a threat.
"You've been practising."
