Chapter 6: The Live Draw
The design board met on forty-one at nine on Monday.
The room held a long walnut table and seven chairs for people who did not like being watched.
Director Meng had called the meeting herself, under the rules of the Golden Needle, to "settle the question of authorship quietly."
She sat at the head of it in black wool, with her jade bracelet laid on the walnut like an exhibit.
Weicheng sat at the far end, as owner, saying nothing.
Yichen sat beside him.
Fang Zhiyuan sat across the table with a clean pad and three sharpened pencils lined up in a row, pale under his good haircut.
"The board has no interest in gossip," Meng said. "We want a simple demonstration. Look fourteen, the folded-back sleeve. Each of you will draw its construction, on the board, from memory. The one who built it will build it twice."
"Twice," said Yichen.
"Once as shown, and once in the second colourway, the one that has never been shown to anyone."
Yichen almost smiled.
Meng had chosen the sleeve because Zhiyuan could trace it.
She had not known about the second colourway, because Zhiyuan had not known either.
He had taken twenty-eight pages, and the twenty-ninth was in the black book still in Yichen's bag, drawn on the back of a train ticket.
"Fine," Yichen said.
Under the table, a hand closed lightly around his left wrist.
Weicheng did not look at him.
His face stayed turned toward the board, composed and cold.
His thumb pressed into the inside of Yichen's wrist, just under the bone, where the skin was thin.
