Chapter 12: Gray Eyes

Four weeks after Marla came, the news reached the clinic on her phone, over burnt toast.

"Doc." She held the screen out across the steel table. "Don't read the comments."

I read the headline first.

West Coast Alpha Missing After Attack on Own Guards.

Under it, in smaller type, a reporter's account.

Three of Alpha Mackay's personal guards had been found dead in the sub-basement of the Mackay Tower that morning.

The bodies were torn open.

The vault door had been ripped off its hinges.

The Alpha had not been seen since.

"They're saying it was a rogue."

Marla's voice was flat.

"Nobody believes that. Everyone in the tower knows whose claw marks those were."

I put the phone down.

My hands felt cold and clean.

"Lydia is on the next page," Marla said. "She gave a statement."

"She's heartbroken, she begs the pack to stay calm, and she's staying on as acting head of the household until he returns."

"Of course she is."

"Doc."

Marla leaned across the table.

"His beast got loose with nobody to stop it. Eight weeks without you, and three men are dead."

"I know."

"You can't go back."

"I know that too."

I did know it.

I picked up the toast and looked at it and put it down again.

"I held him for three years, Marla."
