Chapter 29: Eamon's POV: Gray and Rust

Eamon's POV

The first silver round took me in the left shoulder, and my beast woke up all at once.

It did not rise slowly, the way it had for six years.

It hit the inside of my skull and wanted out, and the pain was white and loud.

I went down on one knee behind the lectern with my teeth locked.

Around me the cathedral was screaming.

Forty northern men had pulled pistols from their coats and were firing into the Mackay guards along the wall, and the guards were shooting back and dying on the stone.

I could not hold it.

I had held it for six years with cuffs and her hands and her breath, and she was thirty feet away, standing in the middle of the aisle in a grey sweater.

"Hazel!"

She turned and looked up at me.

I saw her read my face, and I saw her understand.

Then she did a thing I will remember when I am old.

She pulled off her sweater and her shoes and shifted where she stood, in front of two thousand people.

It took less than a breath.

A rust-gold wolf, nearly as big as my own, stood in the aisle with her ears flat and her teeth bared.

She was magnificent.

My beast, which had screamed in my head for six years, went silent and looked at her.

I did not feel it let go.

I felt it step aside.

I let the change take me.

My coat ripped, my bones moved, and I came down on the dais as the gray wolf with the silver bullet burning in my shoulder.

Hazel's wolf came up the steps to my left flank and pressed her shoulder against mine, hard.

For the first time in six years, I knew what I was doing.
