Chapter 15: Catalina on the Stairs

Catalina Mayhew was sitting on my garage stairs when I came home on Thursday.

She had her knees pulled up and her phone in both hands, and she stood the moment she saw me.

"I'm sorry," she said. "I didn't know where else to go."

"You can come up," I said.

Across the street, a truck sat under the live oak with its lights off.

I had told Emilio to wait there, and he was waiting, with the window down.

He had turned his face away to give us our privacy.

I unlocked the door and turned on the lamp.

The mattress lay on the floor with a sheet on it now, and I had put one stack of books on a shelf.

Catalina stood in the middle of the room and did not sit.

Close up, she looked younger than twenty-six.

She wore no makeup, and her eyes were swollen, and she had chewed her lower lip raw.

"I brought you something," she said. "I thought you should see it. I'm not trying to hurt you."

She held out her phone.

I took it.

It was a year of messages, and she had scrolled to the first one.

My wife is a ghost in the house. I eat dinner alone with her in the room.
