Chapter 12: Seventy Percent
Hazel stood at the center of the stage with the microphone in one hand.
She looked at the three hundred faces and let the silence go on for a long moment.
"Good evening," she said. "I'm Hazel Cartwright Dunleavy."
Somebody in the back row whispered, "Cartwright."
"My father was a Cartwright. Some of you did business with him. Some of you borrowed from him." She smiled slightly. "He liked to say he'd built this firm out of one loan and one good friend."
Connor stepped toward her.
"Hazel, darling, let's not."
"Please stay where you are."
He stopped.
I do not know what it was in her voice.
"My husband just told you he runs this firm," Hazel said. "He has run it for five years. I'd like to tell you who owns it."
She nodded at the screen.
A page appeared, with a seal at the bottom and a column of numbers.
The old trustee stood up in the aisle and cleared his throat.
"The Cartwright Family Trust holds seventy percent of Kettering Dunleavy Realty," the trustee said, in a dry, careful voice. "Mr. Dunleavy holds fifteen. Mr. Kettering holds fifteen. Voting authority over the trust's interest passed back to Mrs. Dunleavy on the fourteenth of August. I've signed the filing."
A sound went through the theater.
Natalie turned toward Connor with her mouth open.
"That's not," Connor said. "That's not what the paperwork says."
"The paperwork says whatever the original says," the trustee said. "Which you did not read."
"The notice that removed Miles Kettering this week," Hazel said, "was signed with a proxy Connor gave up in August. He used the old form."
