Chapter 18: Dinner at the Developer's
The officer took us to a bare room on the first floor of the hospital, with a table and four chairs.
Connor sat down opposite me and squared his lawyer's folder on the table.
"Mr. Kettering has been moving client money since the spring," Connor said. "I have the statements."
"I have statements too," Hazel said.
She took a thick envelope from her bag and slid it to the officer.
It was the same bank file she had shown me, with more pages behind it.
The officer read the first sheet and the second.
He turned to the third and stopped.
"Mr. Dunleavy," he said. "The business account that received sixty-two thousand dollars from Mr. Kettering's joint account has one authorized signature."
"Natalie had access."
"The signature on the card is yours."
"Natalie had my card."
"Natalie Dorsey called this department at six this morning," the officer said. "She asked to give a statement. She's on her way in now."
Connor's face lost some of its ease.
It was a small change, only a tightening along the jaw.
"She's a hysterical, jilted woman," he said.
"She's a witness who brought her own copies."
"I'm the managing partner of that firm."
"As of last night, you are not," Hazel said. "I have the vote on video."
The officer looked from one of us to the other.
"I can't arrest anyone on a Saturday morning on a bank file," he said. "I need the bank's records on Monday and a signed statement from the witness. Mr. Kettering, don't leave town. Mr. Dunleavy, you too."
He stood.
Connor stood too, and straightened his cuffs.
"I'll see you tonight," he said, smiling at me. "Everybody who matters will be in one room. Funny how that works out."
"What room?"
"You haven't heard?" He picked up his folder. "Your friend in the fourth row, the developer. He's hosting a dinner at his restaurant. All forty-one clients. They're deciding whose hands the money stays in."
