Chapter 22: The Name on the Door
On Monday morning, the whole office stood in the lobby and waited for us.
Forty-one clients had called by nine to say they were staying.
The developer from the fourth row had sent a bottle of scotch with a note that read: Don't make me regret it.
I walked in with Hazel at my side and a paper bag of bagels in my hand.
The receptionist stood up.
Then everyone stood up, the agents, the closers, the two interns who had never once looked up from their screens.
Nobody said anything.
Then one of the older agents began to clap.
"Okay," I said. "Okay, sit down, we have a lot of calls to return."
"Mr. Kettering," the receptionist said, wiping her eyes. "Mrs. Dunleavy. There's a man on the roof."
"A man?"
"He's from the sign company."
We went up in the elevator and found three workmen on the roof of the building, in hard hats, with a tarp pulled over something large and flat.
The foreman nodded to Hazel.
"Ready when you are, ma'am."
"Take it off."
They pulled the tarp.
It was a new brass plate, the length of a car, bolted to the parapet over Wisconsin Avenue.
It read: CARTWRIGHT KETTERING REALTY.
My name was second, and my mouth went dry.
"You can't," I said.
"It was my father's building and my father's money," Hazel said. "The firm was always his name with your hands. Connor sanded it off, and I'm putting it back."
"Dunleavy is gone."
"I took mine off last week, in the lawyer's office. I'm Cartwright again, until further notice."
"What does further notice mean?"
"Ask me later," she said, and her mouth twitched.
