Chapter 4: Her Things on the Curb
I took Hazel's money for my mother and wrote her an IOU on a coffee shop napkin.
She read it, folded it into her purse and said nothing.
That night I drove home to the condo on Water Street, and the lobby door was propped open with a moving dolly.
Two men in gray shirts were carrying my couch toward the elevator.
I stopped in the doorway of my own living room.
Natalie stood in the middle of it with a clipboard and a coffee, directing them with her chin.
"The lamp stays with the couch," she said. "The rug too. I picked the rug."
"I paid for the rug," I said.
She turned and smiled at me.
"Oh good, you're home. I wanted you to see this before the neighbors do."
"What are you doing?"
"Taking my things. I'm moving in with Connor."
"He's married."
"Not for long."
The mover with the couch glanced between us and kept walking.
"The couch is mine," I said.
"The couch is ours."
"The lease is in my name. The money in the joint account was mine. You took sixty-two thousand dollars, Natalie. My mother's surgery."
She sipped her coffee.
"That was the wedding fund. There's no wedding, so I took the fund. You can call that theft if you like. Connor says a judge would call it a misunderstanding."
"Connor says."
"He's very smart about these things."
I looked at the empty hooks where my grandmother's photo used to hang.
"Where's the photo?"
"In a box. It's ugly."
That was enough.
I walked past her and lifted the other end of the couch out of the mover's hands.
"Sorry, man," I said. "She doesn't live here."
