Chapter 6: Three Terms
Hazel lived in a stone house on the lake, three blocks from the gala theater and ten minutes from my mother's ward.
I had been to it forty times.
I had never once walked through the kitchen.
"Connor's at a client dinner until eleven," she said, and turned on one lamp. "With Natalie, in a private room. I checked."
"You checked."
"I check everything now."
She set two glasses on the island and poured water into mine.
Then she took out her phone and put it between us.
"Before I tell you anything else, I want terms."
"Terms."
"Three. If you break one, I stop."
I sat on a stool and waited.
"One. Nobody hears about any of this until the gala is over. Not your mother, not a friend, not a lawyer."
"My lawyer already knows I was served."
"Then he doesn't hear the rest."
"Fine."
"Two." She hesitated for the first time. "You don't touch me, and I don't touch you. Not until the gala is finished."
I looked at her.
"Why would I touch you?"
"You wouldn't. It's about the fact that you're a man in a bad week, and I'm a woman in a house with no husband in it, and we're both a little too tired to be careful."
That was blunt, even for her.
"All right," I said. "And the third?"
"That's yours."
"Mine?"
"You said you hate that I knew. So you get one. Name it."
I turned my glass in my fingers.
"No more lies," I said. "No managing me. If something is going to happen, I hear it from you first, even when you think it's kinder not to."
She nodded, slowly.
