Chapter 8: The Tune He Shouldn't Know

The key turned in the lock a second time.

Noah caught Adrian's wrist and pulled him back down onto the mattress.

Adrian let him.

Valerius's steward had already let himself in once tonight. Noah was not going to let him see the prince standing at attention over a half-dressed priest.

Adrian's pulse ran hard under Noah's thumb.

'I am answering it,' Adrian said.

'You are staying here,' Noah said.

Adrian looked at the hand on his wrist, then at the door.

The lock clicked. The door swung in.

Steward Malchior filled the threshold in Valerius's colors, the second key still in his fist.

He saw them. His eyes moved from the bed to the prince and back, and he gave nothing away.

'My lord has ordered the priest moved to the lower cells,' he said. 'Before the inspection.'

He said it to the room, not to Adrian. Twice now the order had been spoken out loud.

Adrian stood. He pulled his shirt off the floor and put it on, unhurried.

'Noah stays in these rooms,' he said. 'I will answer my father myself.'

Malchior did not blink.

'The lower cells are already being swept and warmed for him,' he said.

He looked past Adrian, at Noah on the bed, and said it plainly.

A cell was waiting. It did not matter what Adrian wanted.

'You may go,' Adrian said.

Malchior backed out with the key still in his hand. He pulled the door shut behind him.

The lock did not turn.

Adrian stood facing the door a moment longer than he needed to.

Then he crossed to the table and poured water from the pitcher.
